Havening Techniques ® Havening is based on the latest Neuro-Science. It has shown to have a very positive impact on those affected by Stress and Trauma. It is designed to de-traumatise the nervous system and diminish or eliminate debilitating symptoms of unprocessed trauma. The word Havening is the transitive verb of Haven – to put in a safe place.
Havening is a fairly new psycho-sensory method. It utilizes touch to the palms, the upper arms or the face to create Delta brain waves which are soothing and signal to the body that we are safe. Havening utilizes the Neurotransmitters that are released through the presence of Delta waves to target the receptors in the Amygdala that hold unprocessed trauma memory and cause “triggering” (where the past appears in the here and now). Havening Techniques can reset those receptors to a healthy reactivity threshold and reduce or eliminate many of the debilitating symptoms of unprocessed trauma.
Havening also offers clients valuable tools. Regular self-havening supports nervous system regulation, reduces anxiety and stress, supports emotional well-being and has been shown to build nervous system resilience. Most clients will quickly pick up a technique to help themselves when they feel activated outside the session space to calm themselves and bring themselves back into their “window of tolerance” where they have agency. This can be a game-changer for clients who are caught in the negative reinforcing downwards spiral of being triggered and finding themselves flooded by the old feeling states of helplessness or powerlessness.
Havening sessions can help with:
Feeling Overwhelmed, Hypervigilant, Panicky
Experiencing panic Attacks or Flashbacks
Reoccurring Fears and Phobias
Everyday Stress
Nervous system dysregulation and/or low nervous system resilience
PTSD, (C)-PTSD
If you are affected by the impact of recent or past stressful or traumatic events that hold a charge or have a negative impact such as:
High Impact Accidents/Incidents
Bereavement
Abuse
Abandonment and Betrayal
Bullying
Verbal, Physical, and Sexual Assault, and more
About Havening sessions: With Havening there is no need to speak about what has happened, so if you wish, you can. Sometimes clients don’t have a story – If you can think about how you are affected, feel it – we can work with this with Havening. Once we have established the “headline” of what we are working on, I will choose the most suitable Havening Technique(s) to work with this. Often different techniques are strung together within a session, and I will guide you through them. What all Techniques have in common is that the soothing Havening Touch is utilized. Usually, the client will come to a place of “settling” – where the distress is greatly reduced or completely absent.
Havening Practitioners see repeatedly clients who have been in therapy for years, sometimes decades who experience after a few Havening sessions a noticeable shift and reduction in the debilitating symptoms of unprocessed trauma. Whilst Havening has consistently shown to deliver fast and lasting results, as with any modality, there are no guarantees. Trauma is a complex topic, as trauma encodes in several ways in our body-mind. Havening Techniques are focused on reprocessing the encoding in the Amygdala, and the symptoms that are associated with this. Sadly, there is no one-suits-all approach.
